WhatsApp is a free messaging and calling app from WhatsApp LLC, part of Meta. The current App Store version is 26.42.74; it runs on Android and iOS, and its official site is whatsapp.com.
Chances are most of the people in your contacts already use WhatsApp. The app uses your phone number as your account, so the moment you install it you can start chatting with any contact who has it too. Messages travel over the internet, so there are no SMS charges.
What does WhatsApp offer?
- Messages and voice notes: Send text, photos, videos, documents and your location, or record a voice message when typing would take too long.
- Voice and video calls: Call one-on-one or as a group; on Wi-Fi, calls use no mobile data.
- Groups, communities and channels: Set up family or work groups, and follow channels from organizations you care about.
- Linked devices: Open the same account in WhatsApp Web or the desktop app to keep chatting on a bigger screen.
How to download and install
- The Download button opens the official download page on whatsapp.com, where you can jump to the right store for your phone. You can also install it directly from Google Play or the App Store.
- Open the app, select your country and enter your phone number.
- Type in the six-digit code you receive by SMS or phone call, then add your name and, if you like, a profile photo.
- If you made a backup before, tap “Restore” during setup to bring back your old chats.
Good to know
Personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default. Chat backups saved to Google Drive or iCloud are a separate matter: you have to turn on their encryption under Settings > Chats > Chat backup. Modified versions such as “WhatsApp Gold” or “WhatsApp Plus” are not official and can get your account banned, so only install the app from the official stores.
