Telegram is a free, cloud-based messaging app developed by Telegram FZ-LLC. The current App Store version is 13.1.1; besides Android and iOS it also runs on computers, and its official site is telegram.org.
Telegram stores your messages on its own cloud servers rather than on your phone. That means you can sign in from a tablet or computer and reach all your chats even when your phone is switched off. Moving to a new phone doesn’t involve restoring a backup.
What makes Telegram stand out
- Huge groups and channels: Groups can grow to 200,000 members, and channels broadcast announcements to an unlimited number of subscribers.
- Big files: Send files of any type, up to 2 GB each.
- Usernames: Set a username so people can reach you without seeing your phone number.
- Bots: Add bots that work inside chats for reminders, polls, news alerts and more.
How to download and install
- The Download button opens the official apps page on telegram.org, with links for Android and iPhone. You can also install the app directly from Google Play or the App Store.
- Enter your phone number and type in the verification code you receive.
- Add your name, and if you like, set a username and a two-step verification password in Settings.
Good to know
Regular Telegram chats are encrypted between your device and the server, but they are not end-to-end encrypted. End-to-end encryption is used only in secret chats, which are between two people on a single device, and in calls. The core features are free; an optional Telegram Premium subscription adds extras such as a larger file size limit.
Pros
- Chats live in the cloud, available on several devices at once
- Send files up to 2 GB
- Chat by username without sharing your number
Cons
- Regular chats are not end-to-end encrypted
- Some extra features require Premium
