Facebook is the social network most people already have an account on, and its phone app is the quickest way to check in with friends, family and local groups. It gathers your Feed, Reels, Stories, Marketplace and event invitations in one place, so it often replaces the website on a phone. Messaging lives in a separate app, Messenger.

What you can do in the app

• Feed and Reels: Follow friends and pages, and personalise the Feed so you see more of what you like.
• Marketplace: Browse and list items for sale near you; Meta’s store listing highlights it as a main feature.
• Groups and events: Join communities around hobbies, neighbourhoods or schools and respond to event invitations.
• Photos and Stories: Share pictures, short videos and moments that disappear after a day.

Installing it safely

Install Facebook only from Google Play on Android or the App Store on iPhone. Modified copies on other sites are not published by Meta and can steal your password. After installing, sign in with your existing account or tap the sign-up option to create one.

Keeping your account yours

Open the app menu, go to Settings & privacy, then Settings, and look for the Accounts Center to review password and security options. Turn on two-factor authentication, preferably with an authenticator app, and check which devices are logged in from time to time. Consider Google Authenticator or a password manager such as Bitwarden for codes and strong passwords.

The app is free; advertising pays for it. Some features, such as boosting posts, are paid options you choose to buy.
