Pokémon GO is a free location-based game originally created by Niantic with The Pokémon Company, now published by Scopely. It runs on Android and iOS, with optional in-app purchases. Its official site is pokemongo.com.
Pokémon GO turns a walk around your neighborhood into a hunt. The map in the game is based on the real world: as you move, Pokémon appear near you, and parks, landmarks and shops become places to collect items and battle.
How the game works
- Catch Pokémon: Tap a Pokémon on the map and throw Poké Balls to catch it, optionally with your camera’s AR view.
- PokéStops and Gyms: Visit real-world spots to collect items, and battle at Gyms for your team.
- Raid Battles: Team up with nearby players, or join remotely, to defeat powerful Pokémon.
- Eggs and buddies: Walking hatches eggs and earns candy for your buddy Pokémon.
- Trading and battles: Trade with friends and battle other trainers.
How to download and install
- The Download button opens the official Pokémon GO site; you can also go straight to Google Play or the App Store.
- Sign in with one of the account options the game offers, such as a Google or Apple account or a Pokémon Trainer Club account.
- Allow location access, which the game needs to work, and choose your trainer’s look.
Good to know
Watch where you are going and never play while driving. Your phone needs GPS and a mobile data connection to play outdoors, and the game uses more battery than most apps. Younger players need a parent’s approval to create an account, and in-app purchases can be limited in the phone’s settings.
Pros
- Gets you outside and walking
- Regular events and community days
- Play with friends nearby or remotely
Cons
- Drains battery quickly
- Rural areas have fewer PokéStops and Gyms
