Wappalyzer - Technology profiler is a Chrome extension from Wappalyzer Pty Ltd that identifies the technologies a website uses, such as its CMS, frameworks, analytics and payment tools. The extension is free; the Wappalyzer platform has free and paid plans.

2 min read

Curious whether a competitor runs WordPress or Shopify, or which analytics tool a site loads? Wappalyzer answers that from the toolbar: click its icon and it lists the technologies it detected on the current page.

What it detects

Wappalyzer goes beyond a CMS detector. Its listing says it recognizes more than a thousand technologies in dozens of categories, including:

  • content management systems and e-commerce platforms,
  • JavaScript frameworks and libraries,
  • programming languages,
  • analytics and marketing tools,
  • payment processors, CRMs and CDNs.

You can export results to CSV, and the pop-up has light and dark modes.

Extension versus platform

The extension works on the pages you visit. Wappalyzer also runs a web platform with lookups, website alerts and lead lists. Its pricing page says a free account includes 50 lookups and email verifications per month and 5 website alerts; more requires a paid plan. You don’t need the platform to use the extension’s basic detection.

Installing it

  1. Click Download to open Wappalyzer on the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Add it to Chrome and pin the icon.
  3. Visit a site and click the icon to see the detected technology stack.

Detection is based on signals the site exposes, so some technologies, especially on the server side, may not show up. For deeper page tools, try Web Developer; for colors, ColorZilla.

Pros

  • Identifies a site’s stack in one click
  • Covers more than a thousand technologies
  • CSV export

Cons

  • Some technologies cannot be detected from the page
  • Platform features beyond the free allowance are paid

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wappalyzer’s detection always complete?

No. It identifies technologies from signals the website exposes, so some tools, particularly server-side ones, may not be detected.

Do I need an account to use the extension?

No account is needed to see what a page is built with. A Wappalyzer account is for the web platform’s lookups and alerts.
