ColorZilla is a free color picker and eyedropper extension for Chrome and Firefox from colorzilla.com. It includes a CSS gradient generator, a webpage color analyzer and a color history.

2 min read

Designers and front-end developers often need the exact color of a button or heading on a live site. ColorZilla’s eyedropper reads it straight from the page and copies the value, ready to paste into your CSS or design tool.

Tools in the box

  • Eyedropper: Read the color of any pixel; sample a single pixel or areas of 3×3 up to 25×25 pixels, or the average of a selected area.
  • Advanced color picker: Adjust colors by hue, saturation and value, similar to Photoshop’s picker.
  • Ultimate CSS Gradient Generator: Build gradients visually and get the CSS.
  • Webpage Color Analyzer: Get the palette a site uses.
  • Palette viewer and color history: Seven built-in palettes plus your recently picked colors.
  • Element info: See the tag name, class, ID and size of the element under the cursor.

Picked colors can be copied to the clipboard automatically, and you can pick colors at any zoom level, including from hover states.

Why it asks for access to all sites

The extension needs to read pages to pick colors from them. ColorZilla’s developer states that it does not collect your data or browsing activity, and links to a privacy page on colorzilla.com.

Installing it

  1. Click Download to open ColorZilla on the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Add it to Chrome and pin the icon.
  3. Click the icon, choose Pick Color From Page, and click anywhere.
