Proton Pass is an open-source, end-to-end encrypted password manager from Proton AG in Switzerland. The free plan includes unlimited logins, notes and cards and 10 hide-my-email aliases; Pass Plus adds more.
Proton Pass comes from Proton AG, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail and Proton VPN. Its Chrome extension fills and saves logins, but it also does something most password managers do not: it can create an email alias for each site you sign up to.
Features in the free plan
- Unlimited logins, notes and credit cards with no device limit and no ads.
- Password generator and alerts for weak or reused passwords.
- Passkeys supported on all devices.
- 10 hide-my-email aliases: sign up with an alias that forwards to your real inbox, and turn it off if it starts receiving spam.
- Encrypted metadata: Proton encrypts not just passwords but usernames and website addresses too.
What Pass Plus adds
The paid Pass Plus plan adds unlimited aliases, a built-in 2FA authenticator, vault and link sharing, dark web monitoring, emergency access and custom domains for aliases.
Installing Proton Pass
- The Download button opens the official Proton Pass listing on the Chrome Web Store.
- Click Add to Chrome and sign in with a Proton account, or create a free one.
- Import passwords from Chrome or another manager from the settings.
Open source and data
All Proton Pass apps are open source, and Proton says the service is protected by Swiss privacy law. The store listing discloses that the extension handles authentication information, user activity and website content, which it needs to detect sign-in forms and fill them.
Pros
- Generous free plan with unlimited logins
- Built-in email aliases
- Open source and end-to-end encrypted
