Grammarly for Chrome is the official extension of Grammarly, an AI writing assistant that suggests grammar, clarity and tone fixes as you type on most websites. A free plan is available; Pro is paid.
Grammarly works inside the text boxes you already use. Once the extension is installed, suggestions appear as you write in Gmail, Google Docs, LinkedIn and many other sites, without copying text into a separate app.
What it checks
- Spelling and grammar: mistakes are underlined with a suggested fix.
- Clarity and tone: rewrites for flow and word choice for a given audience.
- Drafting help: generate first drafts and outlines with AI.
- Originality: plagiarism detection and AI content safeguards are part of Grammarly’s tools.
You can expand a suggestion to see why it was made, which helps if you want to learn rather than just click accept.
Free and Pro
Grammarly has a Free plan for correcting spelling and grammar mistakes and a paid Pro plan with more advanced suggestions and AI features. The Chrome listing also mentions Superhuman Go, an optional beta assistant you can turn on in the extension’s settings.
Installation
- The Download button opens Grammarly’s official Chrome Web Store page.
- Click Add to Chrome and sign in or create a Grammarly account.
- Use the extension menu to turn Grammarly off on specific sites where you do not want it.
What it can read
To make suggestions, Grammarly needs to see what you type. The store listing discloses that it handles personally identifiable information, personal communications, location, user activity and website content. Think twice before using it on confidential documents, and switch it off on sites where you type sensitive information. For paraphrasing-focused help, see QuillBot.
Pros
- Works directly in most web text boxes
- Explains its suggestions
- Useful free plan for spelling and grammar
Cons
- Reads what you type to work
- Advanced suggestions and AI features need Pro
