Vivaldi is a free, Chromium-based web browser from Vivaldi Technologies focused on customization and privacy, with built-in mail, calendar, feed reader and ad blocker. It runs on Windows, macOS 13 or later and Linux, with Android and iOS apps.
Vivaldi’s two ground rules, in its own words, are that privacy is a default and everything’s an option. If you like to arrange your tools exactly the way you want, it gives you more switches than almost any other browser.
Highlights
- Tabs and Workspaces: Advanced tab handling and separate workspaces for different projects.
- Ad Blocker and tracking protection built in.
- Vivaldi Mail, Calendar and Feed Reader: An email client, calendar and RSS reader integrated into the browser.
- VPN: Vivaldi offers a VPN feature too.
- Themes and layout: Move and change most parts of the interface.
Vivaldi is built on Chromium, so most Chrome extensions install normally.
Download options
- Click Download to open Vivaldi’s official download page; the main button picks your platform.
- The drop-down lists Windows 64-bit, ARM64 (Snapdragon) and 32-bit, macOS 13+, and Linux DEB and RPM packages for 64-bit and ARM64.
- Legacy builds for Windows 7 and Windows XP/Vista are listed separately. These are older, unsupported systems, so use them only if you have no alternative.
Vivaldi for Android and iOS can sync open tabs, saved logins and notes with the desktop version.
How Vivaldi makes money
The company says it has no outside investors. Its download page discloses that partner bookmarks and Speed Dials can earn Vivaldi a commission when you buy something through them, for example via the eBay Partner Network. You can delete these bookmarks if you don’t want them.
For a privacy-first Firefox-based alternative, see LibreWolf; for a gaming-oriented Chromium browser, Opera GX.
Pros
- Exceptionally customizable interface
- Mail, calendar and feed reader built in
- Ad blocker and tracking protection included
Cons
- The number of options can overwhelm new users
- Partner bookmarks are preinstalled
