LibreWolf is a free, open-source, community-driven browser built from Firefox’s latest stable source, focused on privacy, security and freedom. It has no telemetry, includes uBlock Origin and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and OpenBSD.
LibreWolf takes Firefox and changes its defaults in favor of privacy. Its developers describe it as a custom and independent version of Firefox, and the project is not affiliated with Mozilla.
What’s different from Firefox
- No telemetry: No experiments, adware, sponsored content or data collection.
- uBlock Origin included with custom filter lists, plus Tracking Protection in strict mode.
- Anti-fingerprinting: Resist Fingerprinting (RFP) is enabled, WebGL is disabled, and the browser always reports its language as en-US to websites.
- Private search: Privacy-respecting search engines such as DuckDuckGo and Searx.
- Cleanup on close: Cookies, site data and temporary files are deleted when you close the browser.
- Security defaults: HTTPS-only mode and stricter TLS negotiation.
- Fewer annoyances: No Pocket, no Mozilla VPN ads, media autoplay off. DRM is disabled.
LibreWolf is always built from the latest stable Firefox source, so it receives security fixes and features quickly.
How to install
- Click Download to open LibreWolf’s official installation page.
- Select your system: Windows, macOS, or a Linux family (Arch, Debian-based, Gentoo, RHEL distros such as Fedora, openSUSE, or other Linux), plus OpenBSD.
- Follow the instructions for that platform; many Linux users add LibreWolf’s package repository so it updates with the rest of the system.
Things to expect
Strict defaults can break some sites, and you’ll be logged out of everything when you close the browser. Firefox Sync is off unless you enable it. The settings and overrides documentation explains how to relax individual protections. If you prefer standard Firefox, get Mozilla Firefox; a similar, less strict option is Waterfox.
Pros
- No telemetry and uBlock Origin built in
- Strong anti-fingerprinting defaults
- Built from the latest stable Firefox source
Cons
- Strict defaults can break some websites
- Logs you out on close unless you change settings
