Tor Browser is a free, open-source browser from the Tor Project that sends traffic through the Tor network to protect privacy and get around censorship. It is available for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android.
Tor Browser is built for people who need more than a private window: journalists, activists, people in countries that block websites, and anyone who doesn’t want their internet provider or advertisers to see where they go online.
How it protects you
- Encrypted, three-hop routing: Your traffic is encrypted and passes through three relays in the Tor network. Someone watching your connection can only see that you’re using Tor, not which sites you visit.
- Tracker isolation: Each website is isolated, so third-party trackers and ads can’t follow you from site to site. Cookies and history are cleared automatically when you finish.
- Censorship circumvention: You can reach sites that your government, internet provider or home network blocks; the support portal explains how to connect where Tor itself is blocked.
- Onion services: Some sites only exist on Tor as .onion addresses, which are harder to shut down or censor.
How to download
- Click Download to open the Tor Project’s official download page and choose Tor Browser for Desktop.
- Pick your system: Windows (x86_64 or i686), macOS (Universal) or GNU/Linux (x86_64 or aarch64). An Android version is listed too.
- Advanced users can verify the download’s signature using the links on the same page.
Ground rules from the Tor Project
- Don’t use a separate VPN with Tor.
- Don’t install extra plugins or add-ons. Extensions can make you identifiable.
- Don’t use BitTorrent over Tor.
Pages load more slowly than in a normal browser because of the extra relays. For everyday browsing with strong privacy defaults, LibreWolf or the DuckDuckGo Browser may be more practical.
Pros
- Strong anonymity through the Tor network
- Access to blocked sites and .onion services
- Free, open source and verifiable downloads
Cons
- Slower than ordinary browsers
- Extensions and torrenting undermine its protection
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use a VPN together with Tor Browser?
The Tor Project’s ground rules advise against using a separate VPN with Tor.
Why is Tor Browser slower than other browsers?
Your traffic passes through three relays in the Tor network, which adds delay in exchange for privacy.
