Opera (Opera One) is a free, Chromium-based web browser from Opera with a built-in free VPN, ad blocker and Tab Islands for organizing tabs. It is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.

2 min read

Opera’s flagship browser, Opera One, aims to give you useful tools without installing extensions first. The free VPN and ad blocker are built in, and tabs are grouped automatically into Tab Islands.

Built-in features

  • Free VPN: Built into the browser, with no separate subscription.
  • Ad Blocker: Blocks ads to cut distractions and speed up pages.
  • Tab Islands: Related tabs are grouped together, so you can collapse, move or close a whole task at once.
  • Easy task switching: Tools for moving between tasks and contexts without losing your place.

Opera is built on Chromium, so most Chrome extensions work too.

Which download?

  1. Click Download to open Opera’s official download page.
  2. The main button picks the right installer for your system. Under “Looking for another version?” you’ll find Windows 64-bit, 32-bit and ARM, macOS Universal (including an offline installer) and Linux .deb, .rpm and Snap packages.
  3. There is also a USB (portable) version and links to the Android and iOS apps.

Other Opera browsers

The same page lists Opera’s other browsers: Opera GX for gamers, Opera Air with breathing exercises and break reminders, the experimental agentic Opera Neon, and the lightweight Opera Mini for Android. Opera Developer is an early-access version of Opera One for testing new features.

Opera’s free VPN is part of the browser, not a full system-wide VPN service. If you need protection for all your apps, a dedicated service such as Proton VPN is the better choice.

Pros

  • Free VPN and ad blocker built in
  • Tab Islands keep tabs organized
  • Installers for every major platform, including portable

Cons

  • The built-in VPN only covers the browser
  • Sidebar and extras can feel crowded
