Specter Desktop is a free, open-source (MIT) app from cryptoadvance for managing hardware wallets and multisig setups with your own Bitcoin node. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Specter Desktop is a coordinator: it does not hold your private keys itself. Instead, it helps you build and use wallets whose keys live on hardware wallets, including multisignature wallets that need several devices to approve a payment.
What Specter Desktop does
- Hardware wallet support: Use devices from several manufacturers, connected by USB or through QR codes and files for air-gapped devices.
- Multisig setups: Combine keys from different devices so no single lost or stolen device can move your coins.
- Your own node: Connect to Bitcoin Core or an Electrum server, so your balance checks do not depend on a third party.
- Two ways to run it: A desktop app, or specterd, a server version you open in a browser, also available as a Docker image.
Download
The Download button opens the official GitHub releases page, which lists:
- Windows: an .exe installer.
- macOS: a .dmg app.
- Linux (x86-64): a .tar.gz app.
Make sure you pick the latest stable release, not a pre-release, unless you want to test new features.
Multisig needs careful backups
A multisig wallet needs more than seed phrases: you also need the wallet configuration (the “descriptor”), or you may not be able to rebuild it. Specter can export a backup; keep copies with each device’s recovery phrase. Practice with a small amount before moving savings.
If you do not run a node yet, umbrelOS is one way to set one up at home. Specter Desktop is open source under the MIT license.
Pros
- Multisig with hardware wallets from several makers
- Works with your own node
- Desktop app and server version
Cons
- Technical setup
- Multisig backups need extra care
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Specter Desktop store my private keys?
No. Specter coordinates wallets whose keys stay on your hardware wallets; it builds transactions for those devices to sign.
Do I need a Bitcoin node for Specter Desktop?
Specter is designed to work with your own Bitcoin Core node, and it can also connect to an Electrum server.
