ZEUS is an open-source bitcoin Lightning wallet and node manager for iOS and Android, licensed under AGPLv3. It connects to LND and Core Lightning nodes and can run a Lightning wallet on the phone.

2 min read

ZEUS is built for people who want to control their own Lightning setup. It can run a Lightning wallet directly on the phone, or act as a remote control for a node you already run at home.

Ways to use ZEUS

  • On-device wallet: Start a Lightning wallet on the phone itself, with no separate server.
  • Remote node manager: Connect to your own LND or Core Lightning node, for example one running on Umbrel.
  • Other connections: LNDHub accounts, Lightning Node Connect and Nostr Wallet Connect.
  • Point of sale: A built-in point-of-sale mode, including a Square integration, for small merchants.

Open source

ZEUS is developed in the open on GitHub under the GNU AGPLv3 license. Besides Google Play and the App Store, Android builds are also distributed through F-Droid and Zapstore.

Before you start

  • If you run the wallet on your phone, write down the recovery phrase and keep it offline. Losing both the phone and the phrase means losing the funds.
  • When connecting to a home node, keep the connection details (macaroons, certificates or connection strings) private: they give control over the node.
  • Lightning involves channels and liquidity, and ZEUS shows more of that detail than simpler apps. If you want something more automatic, Phoenix is easier to start with.

Pros

  • Runs on-device or controls your own node
  • Supports LND, Core Lightning and more
  • Open source, also on F-Droid

Cons

  • More technical than simple Lightning wallets
  • Node connection details must be kept private
