BTCPay Server is a free, open-source (MIT) self-hosted bitcoin payment processor. Merchants accept bitcoin directly into their own wallets, with no processing fees or middlemen.

2 min read

BTCPay Server lets a shop, a creator or a charity accept bitcoin without a payment company in the middle. Payments go straight to a wallet you control, and the project itself takes no fees.

Main features

  • Self-hosted invoices: Create invoices and payment pages from your own server.
  • Lightning payments in addition to regular on-chain bitcoin.
  • Built-in apps: A point-of-sale page for in-person sales and a crowdfunding page.
  • E-commerce plugins for popular shop systems, plus an API for custom setups.
  • Plugins that add extra features from the community.

How to deploy it

BTCPay Server is server software, not a desktop program. The official documentation describes several routes:

  • Docker deployment on a Linux server or VPS, the most common option.
  • Home node bundles: Node platforms such as Umbrel offer BTCPay Server in their app stores.
  • Third-party hosts that run an instance for you, at the cost of trusting that host.

Start at the deployment section of docs.btcpayserver.org and pick the option that fits your skills.

Keep it secure

  • Keep the server updated; releases are frequent.
  • Protect the admin account with two-factor authentication.
  • Store your wallet’s recovery phrase offline. BTCPay Server sends funds to your wallet, so the wallet’s backup is what protects the money.

The project is open source under the MIT license, developed on GitHub by a community of contributors. Payments you receive may have tax and legal obligations where you live.

Pros

  • No processing fees
  • Funds go straight to your own wallet
  • Lightning, point of sale and crowdfunding built in

Cons

  • Needs a server and some technical skill
  • You are responsible for updates and backups
