Bisq is an open-source, peer-to-peer bitcoin exchange that runs as a desktop app on Windows, macOS and Linux. It comes in two versions, Bisq 1 and Bisq 2, with PGP-signed installers.
Bisq is a decentralized way to buy and sell bitcoin. There is no company holding your funds or running a central order book: the app on your computer connects to other users over the Tor network, and trades are arranged directly between people.
Bisq 1 or Bisq 2?
- Bisq 1 is the original app with its own trade protocol and security deposits. It suits users who are comfortable with more steps.
- Bisq 2 is the newer app. It currently offers Bisq Easy, a simpler protocol aimed at new users buying smaller amounts.
Both are offered on the official downloads page, and both are open source.
Platforms
- Windows (.exe), macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon .dmg) and Linux (.deb and .rpm; Bisq 1 is also on the Arch User Repository).
- Mobile apps exist for notifications and for Bisq Easy on Android; the full trading apps are desktop software.
Verify the download
Each installer on bisq.network comes with a PGP signature file (.asc). Checking the signature against the project’s published key confirms the installer was not tampered with. The Bisq wiki explains the steps.
Trade carefully
Peer-to-peer trading has its own risks. Follow the in-app rules for payment methods, keep all communication inside the trade chat, and never complete a trade outside the app because a peer asks you to. Your Bisq wallet has its own seed words; write them down and keep them offline.
For a node-based setup at home, see umbrelOS. To accept bitcoin payments rather than trade, look at BTCPay Server.
Pros
- No central company holding funds
- Built-in Tor connection
- PGP-signed installers
Cons
- Slower than a centralized exchange
- Peer-to-peer trades need care with payment methods
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Bisq require identity verification?
Bisq itself does not run a sign-up or identity check, because there is no central company. Your bank or payment provider still has its own rules.
Which Bisq version should a beginner use?
Bisq 2 with the Bisq Easy protocol is aimed at new users. Bisq 1 offers the original protocol with more options.
