SketchUp is a 3D modelling program from Trimble used for architecture, interiors and woodworking. The desktop app comes with SketchUp Pro and Studio subscriptions; a 7-day Pro trial needs no credit card.
SketchUp’s push-pull approach makes 3D modelling feel closer to drawing: you sketch a shape and pull it up into a solid. That is why it is a favourite for quick building massing, interior layouts and furniture plans.
What you can do with SketchUp
- Fast 3D modelling: Draw faces and push or pull them into 3D forms with inference guides.
- 3D Warehouse: Download ready-made models of furniture, fixtures and products to drop into your scene.
- LayOut: Turn models into dimensioned drawings and presentation sheets (included with Pro).
- Extensions: Add tools for rendering, woodworking and more from Extension Warehouse.
Plans with the desktop app
At the time of writing, SketchUp’s plans are:
- Go: iPad and web only, no desktop app.
- Pro: The desktop modeller plus LayOut, PreDesign and extensions.
- Studio: Pro plus Revit import, point-cloud tools and photorealistic rendering; Windows only.
There is also an education plan for students and educators, and SketchUp for Schools is free with a Google Workspace for Education or Microsoft Education account.
