Autodesk Fusion is cloud-connected CAD, CAM and PCB design software for Windows and macOS. A free, limited personal-use licence is available for non-commercial hobby projects; commercial use requires a subscription.
Fusion is popular with makers, engineers and product designers because it combines parametric 3D modelling, CAM for CNC machines and electronics design in one program. Hobbyists can use a free personal-use version.
What Fusion can do
- Parametric modelling: Sketch, extrude and edit features by changing dimensions later.
- 3D printing: Export models for slicers and prepare parts for printing.
- CAM: Generate toolpaths for CNC milling and turning.
- Electronics: Design circuit boards alongside the mechanical enclosure.
- Cloud projects: Files are stored in Autodesk’s cloud, so you can open them on another computer.
Free personal use: the rules
Autodesk’s personal-use licence is free for home-based, non-commercial projects by people earning less than US$1,000 a year from their work. It has limits compared with the paid version: up to 10 active editable documents, and fewer advanced features in areas such as multi-axis machining, collaboration and file export. If you sell products, freelance or earn more than the threshold, Autodesk says you need a commercial subscription.
How to get it
- The Download button opens Autodesk’s Fusion personal-use page.
- Sign in with an Autodesk account and confirm you meet the personal-use terms.
- Download and install Fusion on Windows or macOS. The licence is renewed yearly.
The current minimum is Windows 11 version 23H2 or macOS 14 Sonoma. Students and educators can get Fusion through the Autodesk Education Plan, and businesses can start a commercial trial.
For a fully open-source parametric modeller, try FreeCAD; for sculpting and artistic 3D, Blender is free.
Pros
- CAD, CAM and PCB design in one tool
- Free licence for hobby projects
- Projects available on any computer
Cons
- Personal licence is non-commercial and feature-limited
- Depends on Autodesk’s cloud
