phpMyAdmin is a free web application for administering MySQL and MariaDB. The current 5.2 series needs PHP 7.2 or newer and MySQL/MariaDB 5.5 or newer; packages come in all-languages and English-only versions.
phpMyAdmin is different from desktop database tools: it is a PHP application that runs on a web server and opens in your browser. Many hosting control panels include it already, but you can also install it yourself on a VPS or a local stack.
What you can do in phpMyAdmin
- Browse and edit tables and rows
- Run SQL queries
- Create and drop databases, tables and users
- Import and export data, for example a database backup before a WordPress update
Requirements
The 5.2 series is compatible with PHP 7.2 and newer (the version table lists below 8.4) and MySQL/MariaDB 5.5 and newer.
Downloading the right package
- The Download button opens the official downloads page on phpmyadmin.net.
- Choose all languages or English only, in .zip, .tar.gz or .tar.xz format.
- Each file has a SHA256 checksum and a PGP signature; check them to make sure the download was not altered.
- Extract the archive into your web server’s directory and follow the setup documentation.
Security notes
A phpMyAdmin login page on a public server is a common target. Use strong database passwords, keep phpMyAdmin updated, and consider restricting access to your own IP address or putting it behind extra authentication. On a local machine it often comes bundled, as with XAMPP. If you would rather not expose it at all, use a desktop client such as HeidiSQL over an SSH tunnel.
Pros
- Works in any browser once installed on the server
- Signed downloads with SHA256 checksums
- Familiar from many hosting control panels
Cons
- A public login page needs extra protection
- Must be kept updated on the server
Frequently Asked Questions
Which phpMyAdmin version works with my PHP version?
The downloads page lists PHP 7.2 or newer (and below 8.4) and MySQL/MariaDB 5.5 or newer for the 5.2 series. Check the version table on the page before installing.
Should I download the all-languages or English package?
The all-languages package includes every translation. The English-only package is smaller; choose it if you only need the English interface.
