MySQL Workbench is the official visual tool for MySQL from Oracle. The Community (OSS) edition is free under the GPL and is available for Windows, macOS and Linux; on Windows it needs .NET Framework 4.5 and the Visual C++ 2019 Redistributable.
If your website runs on MySQL, MySQL Workbench is the tool made by the same team. It brings query writing, performance analysis and server administration into one desktop app.
Main uses
- SQL development: Write and run SQL in the Script Editor, or document exploratory work in SQL Notebooks.
- Server administration: Review server status and settings, manage user accounts and privileges, and check client connections.
- Performance analysis: Performance Reports for slow queries and Visual Explain for query plans.
- Backup and migration: Visual backup and restore workflows.
Oracle notes that the latest version is backwards compatible with all currently supported MySQL Server versions and is recommended for all users.
Getting the Community edition

- Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2019
Licence
The Community (OSS) Edition is offered under the GPL (version 2) and is free.
For a lighter tool on Windows, HeidiSQL also works with MySQL; for many database engines in one app, see DBeaver Community.
Pros
- Official MySQL tool from Oracle
- SQL editor, performance reports and administration in one app
- Free Community edition under the GPL
Cons
- Focused on MySQL only
- Extra runtime libraries needed on Windows
