OneTab is a free Chrome extension from OneTab Ltd that converts all open tabs into a list on one page. Tabs can be restored individually or all together, and tab URLs stay on your computer.

2 min read

Every open tab uses some memory, and dozens of them can slow a computer down. OneTab is a simple fix: one click turns all your tabs into a tidy list, and the tabs themselves are closed until you need them again.

How OneTab works

  1. Click the OneTab icon in the toolbar.
  2. All tabs in the window are closed and appear as a list of links on the OneTab page.
  3. Click any link to reopen that tab, or use Restore all to bring the whole group back.

Groups are kept on the OneTab page, so you can collapse a research session today and pick it up next week.

Why it helps

Closing tabs into a list frees the memory and CPU those pages were using. The developer says storing tabs in OneTab can save up to 95% of memory compared with keeping them open, because the browser no longer has to run them.

Installing OneTab

  1. The Download button opens the official OneTab listing on the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click Add to Chrome and pin the funnel icon so it is easy to reach.

Privacy

OneTab is designed so that your tab URLs are never sent to the developers or anyone else; icons for the sites are generated by Google. The only exception is the optional Share as web page feature, which uploads a list of tabs to a page so you can share it. The developer also declares on the store listing that it does not collect or use your data.

If you want sessions saved automatically, with crash recovery and collections, Session Buddy goes further. For tabs you want to keep open but idle, Auto Tab Discard is another option.

Pros

  • One click to clear tab clutter
  • Frees memory used by open tabs
  • Tab URLs stay local

Cons

  • Closed tabs lose their page state, such as unsent form text
  • Basic organization features

Frequently Asked Questions

Does OneTab upload my tabs anywhere?

No, unless you use the optional "Share as web page" feature. Otherwise your tab URLs stay on your computer.

Can I restore just one tab from a OneTab list?

Yes. Click any link in the list to reopen that tab, or restore the whole group at once.
