Lutris is a free, open-source game library manager for Linux. It gives you one place to launch games from Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG and Humble Bundle, and installs the runners, emulators and compatibility layers they need.

2 min read

Gaming on Linux often means juggling Steam, Wine prefixes, emulators and separate launchers. Lutris tries to put all of that behind a single window, and the project describes itself as a video game preservation platform.

What it manages

Lutris provides the tools your games need and keeps them organised:

  • Store libraries: You can connect accounts from Steam, the Epic Games Store, GOG and Humble Bundle and launch from one list.
  • Runners: Wine-based compatibility layers, emulators and game engine re-implementations are offered as runners, so you do not install each by hand.
  • Install scripts: The Lutris website hosts community install scripts that set up a particular game with suitable settings.

Getting it

The official site has a Download button that lists packages and instructions for common distributions. Pick the method for your distribution there. Avoid copying install commands from unofficial blogs, since they can be out of date.

Things to know

  • Lutris is Linux only. Windows and macOS users should look at launchers such as Heroic Games Launcher.
  • A script from the community may install software from other sources; read what a script does before running it.
  • Games that rely on kernel-level anti-cheat often cannot run on Linux at all, no matter which launcher you use.

The project is free and accepts donations.

Pros

  • Brings several game libraries into one window
  • Installs runners and compatibility layers for you
  • Free and open source

Cons

  • Linux only
  • Community install scripts need a careful read
