Lumion Pro is a paid 3D rendering program for architects and designers, developed by Lumion. It offers a 14-day free trial and a free one-year student license, and runs on 64-bit Windows 10 or newer with a powerful GPU.
Lumion is built for one job: taking a building model you already have and turning it into images, panoramas and videos a client can understand, without a long render setup. You import the model, place it in a landscape, add materials, people and vegetation, and render.
Who uses Lumion
Lumion’s own site targets building architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and urban planning. It works with models from SketchUp, Revit, Archicad, Rhino, AutoCAD, FormIt, Allplan, Vectorworks, BricsCAD and 3ds Max, so it usually sits at the end of an existing design workflow rather than replacing a modelling tool.
The 14-day trial
- The Download button opens the free trial page on lumion.com.
- Fill in the form, confirm the email, then log in to your Lumion Account to download the installer.
- The trial is the full Lumion Pro for 14 days, including Lumion Cloud’s AI and collaboration tools. No credit card is needed.
The only difference from the paid version is the content library: the trial ships with a curated set of materials, characters, vegetation and objects rather than the full library.
Hardware matters more than usual
Lumion relies on the graphics card. The minimum is an up-to-date 64-bit Windows 10 (version 2004) or newer, a GPU with a G3DMark score of 8,000 or higher (for example a GeForce GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 580), 16 GB of RAM and an internet connection. The trial needs at least 12 GB of free disk space; the full commercial version needs about 105 GB. There is no macOS version.
Students and licences
Students can apply for a free Lumion Student license, valid for one year and renewable while they study. It is not for commercial use, renders carry a small watermark and student projects cannot be opened in commercial versions. Commercial use needs a paid plan. If your GPU is below the bar, D5 Render has a free Community version, and Twinmotion is free under a revenue threshold.
Pros
- Fast route from a CAD or BIM model to client-ready renders
- Works with many modelling programs
- Free one-year license for students
Cons
- Windows only and demanding on the GPU
- Commercial use requires a paid plan
