Adobe Photoshop is a subscription photo editing and image design program from Adobe for Windows and macOS. A 7-day free trial is available from adobe.com, after which a paid Creative Cloud plan is required.
Photoshop is the program many photographers, retouchers and designers learn first, and it is still a standard file format in studios and print shops. It is sold only as a subscription, but Adobe lets you try the full desktop app before you pay.
What Photoshop is used for
- Photo retouching: Remove blemishes and objects, fix exposure and colour, and work non-destructively with layers and masks.
- Compositing: Combine several images into one, with precise selections and blending.
- Generative tools: Adobe’s Firefly-based features can fill or expand parts of an image from a text prompt; they use generative credits that come with your plan.
- Design work: Social media graphics, mock-ups and print layouts that start from pixels rather than vectors.
How the free trial works
- The Download button opens Adobe’s official Photoshop free-trial page.
- Sign in with an Adobe account and enter billing details. Adobe says there is no charge during the trial.
- Install the Creative Cloud desktop app, which downloads and installs Photoshop for you.
The trial lasts 7 days. If you do not cancel, it turns into a paid membership. To stop it, open your Adobe account, choose Manage plan and cancel within the trial; Adobe also lists a full refund if you cancel within 14 days of being billed.
Plans after the trial
At the time of writing, the single-app Photoshop plan costs US$22.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly, and Creative Cloud Pro bundles Photoshop with 20+ other Adobe apps. Students and teachers can get Creative Cloud Pro at a large discount through Adobe’s education offer.
If a subscription is not for you, GIMP is a free, open-source editor, and Affinity offers photo editing in a free all-in-one app.
Pros
- Industry-standard tools and PSD format
- Generative fill and expand built in
- Huge range of tutorials and plug-ins
Cons
- Subscription only, no one-time purchase
- Trial converts to a paid plan unless cancelled
