GIMP Download: Free, Open-Source Photo Editor

Retouching a photo, putting together a collage, sketching a logo or doing some simple digital painting does not require a paid subscription. GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free image editor that has been in development for more than twenty years.

What can you do with it?

• Work in layers: Layers, layer masks and blend modes are all supported, and GIMP 3 added non-destructive (reversible) filters.
• Selection and retouching: Free select, foreground select, heal and clone tools help you clean up blemishes and unwanted objects.
• Color correction: Adjust the tone of a photo with curves, levels and color balance.
• File formats: Besides its own XCF format, it works with PNG, JPEG, WebP and TIFF, and it can import PSD files.

How to download and install

1. The Download button opens the official download page on gimp.org.
2. On Windows, download and run the installer. On macOS, choose the DMG that matches your processor (Apple Silicon or Intel).
3. On first launch, the interface follows your system language.

Good to know

GIMP’s menu layout differs from Photoshop’s, so the shortcuts take some getting used to at first. Only download it from gimp.org; the site itself warns that files from anywhere else may not be safe.
