Krita is made by artists for artists. Where many image editors focus on photos, Krita is designed around drawing and painting with a pen tablet, from quick sketches to finished illustrations and comic pages.

What can you do with Krita?

  • Brush engines: Hundreds of built-in brushes that imitate pencils, inks, watercolor and oil paint, plus tools to create your own.
  • Layers and masks: Paint, vector, filter and group layers, with blending modes and non-destructive masks.
  • Drawing aids: Perspective assistants, symmetry modes and stabilizers help with clean lines.
  • Animation: A frame-by-frame animation timeline with onion skinning.
  • Comic tools: Panel templates and text tools for laying out comic pages.

How to download and install

  1. The Download button opens the official download page on krita.org.
  2. On Windows, choose the installer (or the portable ZIP). On macOS, download the DMG; on Linux, the AppImage runs without installation.
  3. If you use a pen tablet, install its latest driver first so pressure sensitivity works in Krita.

Hardware and paid store copies

Krita needs at least 4 GB of RAM, and the developers recommend 16 GB for large canvases. It is also sold in some app stores; those paid copies are the same program, and the money goes towards development.

Pros

  • Excellent brush engines for painting
  • Animation and comic tools included
  • Free and open source

Cons

  • Not aimed at photo editing
  • Large canvases need plenty of RAM

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Krita really free?

Yes. Krita is free and open source under the GNU GPL v3. Paid versions in some stores are the same program and help fund development.

Do I need a drawing tablet for Krita?

No, but it helps a lot. Krita works with a mouse, and it supports pressure-sensitive pen tablets that are compatible with your operating system.
