Shotcut is a free, open-source, cross-platform video editor developed by Meltytech. The current version is 26.9.27; it runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11, macOS 12 or later, and 64-bit Linux.
Shotcut is a good fit when you need more than a basic trimmer but do not want a heavy professional suite. It opens most video and audio formats directly, without importing or converting them first.
Key features
- Multi-track timeline: Stack video and audio tracks, trim clips and add transitions.
- Wide format support: Built on FFmpeg, so it edits most formats natively, including 4K footage.
- Filters: Color grading, text, blur, chroma key (green screen) and many audio filters.
- Keyframes: Animate filter settings such as position, size and opacity over time.
- Portable option: A ZIP version runs without installation, handy for USB drives.
Installer or portable?
- Windows users get two choices on shotcut.org: a 64-bit installer of about 146 MB, or a portable ZIP that runs from any folder.
- Mac users download the DMG; Linux users can pick an AppImage, Flatpak or Snap.
- The default installer options are fine, and no account is needed.
Good to know
The current release needs Windows 10 build 1809 or later. Older systems are stuck on earlier releases: Windows 7 and 8 stop at version 22.12.21, and macOS 11 at 24.11.17.
Pros
- No watermark and no paid tier
- Edits most formats without converting
- Portable version available
Cons
- Interface feels less polished than commercial editors
- Some panels are hidden until you enable them
