DaVinci Resolve is a video editing, color grading, visual effects and audio post-production application from Blackmagic Design. The current version is 21.1.2; the free edition runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with an iPad version too.
DaVinci Resolve is used on feature films and TV shows, yet its standard edition is free. One application covers editing, color correction, visual effects (Fusion) and audio post-production (Fairlight), so you move between them with tabs instead of separate programs.
What’s included in the free edition?
- Cut and Edit pages: A fast page for quick edits and a full timeline for detailed work.
- Color page: The color grading tools Resolve is known for, with nodes, curves, qualifiers and tracking.
- Fusion: Node-based visual effects and motion graphics.
- Fairlight: A complete audio workspace with mixing, effects and ADR tools.
- No watermark: Exports from the free edition carry no watermark.
Downloading the free edition
- On Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve page, click “Free Download Now”.
- Pick the plain DaVinci Resolve (not Studio) for your operating system. Blackmagic asks you to fill in a short registration form before the download starts.
- Run the installer and restart your computer if prompted.
Hardware and the Studio upgrade
Resolve is demanding: a dedicated graphics card and plenty of RAM make a big difference. Minimum operating systems are Windows 10 Creators Update, macOS 12 Monterey and Rocky Linux 8.6. The paid DaVinci Resolve Studio adds extra effects, AI tools and higher-resolution output, but most home projects do not need it.
Pros
- Professional color grading in a free app
- Editing, effects and audio in one place
- No watermark on exports
Cons
- Needs a powerful graphics card
- Steep learning curve for beginners
Frequently Asked Questions
Is DaVinci Resolve really free?
Yes. The standard DaVinci Resolve is free with no time limit and no watermark. DaVinci Resolve Studio is the paid version with additional features.
Will DaVinci Resolve run on my laptop?
It depends on the hardware. Resolve leans heavily on the graphics card and memory, so older or low-end laptops may struggle, especially with 4K footage.
