ShareX is a free, open-source screen capture, screen recording and file sharing tool for Windows. The current version is 21.0.0; it is available from getsharex.com, GitHub, the Microsoft Store and Steam.

2 min read

ShareX goes well beyond the Print Screen key. Capture a region, a window or an entire scrolling page, mark it up, and have it saved, copied or uploaded automatically, all with one shortcut.

What can ShareX do?

  • Many capture modes: Full screen, active window, a monitor, a selected region or a scrolling page.
  • Screen recording: Record video or animated GIFs of your screen.
  • After-capture tasks: Automatically copy, save, pin to screen, print or run text recognition (OCR) on a capture.
  • Image editor: Add arrows, shapes, text and blur or pixelate sensitive details before sharing.
  • Uploads: Send files to a long list of image hosts and cloud services, or to your own server with a custom uploader.
  • Extra tools: Color picker, screen ruler, image combiner, video trimmer and QR code reader.

Setup or portable

  1. On getsharex.com, pick the Setup file to install ShareX, or the Portable version to run it without installing.
  2. ShareX is also published on the Microsoft Store and Steam.
  3. After installation, the icon sits in the notification area; right-click it to configure hotkeys and after-capture actions.

Good to know

ShareX is released under the GPL v3 and does not require an account. Uploading is optional; if you do not want captures to leave your computer, keep the after-capture task set to saving locally.

Pros

  • Huge range of capture and recording modes
  • Automated after-capture workflows
  • Free, open source and ad-free

Cons

  • The number of options can be overwhelming
  • Windows only

Frequently Asked Questions
