OBS Studio is free, open-source screen recording and live streaming software from the OBS Project. The current version is 33.0, released on October 23, 2026; it runs on Windows 10 and 11, macOS 13 or later, and Linux.
Streaming a game, recording a lesson or capturing a meeting does not call for paid software. OBS Studio does all of it in a single window, with no watermark, no time limit and no ads.
What can you do with OBS Studio?
- Scenes and sources: Stack sources such as your screen, a window, a webcam, images and text into a scene, then switch between scenes with one click.
- Audio mixer: Set microphone and desktop audio levels separately and add filters such as noise suppression and a noise gate.
- Live streaming: Connect to Twitch, YouTube and similar services with a stream key.
- Recording: Save video as MKV or MP4. If your graphics card supports it, the hardware encoder keeps the load off your CPU.
- Virtual camera: Feed the OBS output into video call apps as if it were a webcam.
How to download and install
- The Download button opens the official download page on obsproject.com; choose your operating system.
- The Windows installer is about 187 MB. Run it and continue with the default options.
- On first launch, the Auto-Configuration Wizard asks whether you plan to stream or record and suggests settings that suit your computer.
Good to know
obsproject.com is the only official home of OBS Studio. The installer is free; sites asking for money under names like “OBS Pro” are not official. Stream quality depends on your upload speed, so you may need to lower the bitrate in the settings to match your connection before you go live.
Pros
- No watermark and no recording time limit
- Very flexible scene and source system
- Extendable with plugins
Cons
- The number of settings can be confusing at first
- Streaming and recording at once can strain low-end hardware
