VLC Media Player is a free, open-source media player developed by VideoLAN. The current version is 3.0.24; it runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, and its official site is videolan.org.
If a video refuses to play and your computer complains about a missing codec, VLC is usually the first thing worth trying. Built by the non-profit VideoLAN community, the player ships with its own decoders, so there is no separate codec pack to hunt down.
What can VLC do?
- Plays nearly everything: Common files such as MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, FLAC and MP3, plus DVDs, audio CDs and many streaming protocols.
- Subtitles: SRT and ASS subtitles load automatically, and if the timing drifts you can nudge it forward or back from the keyboard.
- Network streams: Paste a link to open a stream directly, or browse shares on your local network.
- Conversion: The “Convert/Save” menu turns a video into another format or pulls out just the audio track.
How to download and install
- The Download button takes you to the official page on videolan.org, which detects your operating system for you.
- On Windows, run the installer you downloaded and go through the steps with the default options.
- If you accept the file associations at the end, videos will open in VLC with a double-click.
The Android and iOS versions are free in the official app stores.
Good to know
VLC shows no ads and does not sell usage data. Paid editions circulating online as “VLC Pro” or “VLC Plus” are not official, so only download the player from videolan.org or the official app stores.
Pros
- Opens almost any format without extra codecs
- Free, open source and ad-free
- Easy subtitle and audio sync adjustments
Cons
- Simple but dated-looking interface
- Limited library and album management
