Adobe Illustrator is Adobe’s vector graphics program for Windows, macOS and iPad. It is sold by subscription, with a 7-day free trial available from adobe.com.
Vector artwork is made of paths rather than pixels, so a logo drawn in Illustrator looks just as sharp on a business card as on a billboard. That is why Illustrator files are a common request from printers, sign makers and brand agencies.
Where Illustrator shines
- Logos and brand marks: Precise pen and shape tools, with artwork that scales without losing quality.
- Icons and infographics: Grids, alignment tools and symbols keep repeated elements consistent.
- Typography: Set and reshape text, and convert type to outlines for print.
- Print-ready output: Export to PDF, SVG, EPS and other formats suppliers ask for.
Starting the trial
- The Download button opens Adobe’s Illustrator free-trial page.
- Pick a plan to try, sign in with your Adobe account and check out. Adobe says you are not charged until the trial ends.
- The Creative Cloud desktop app installs Illustrator on Windows or macOS.
The free trial runs for 7 days on desktop and iPad. It converts to a paid plan unless you cancel in your Adobe account before it ends. Adobe also offers a full refund if you cancel within 14 days of the first charge.
Paying afterwards
At the time of writing, Illustrator on its own is US$22.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly, and Creative Cloud Pro includes Illustrator along with Photoshop, InDesign and other apps. Students and teachers can get a discount on Creative Cloud Pro.
Prefer free tools? Inkscape is an open-source vector editor, and Affinity includes vector design in a free app.
