Electrum is a free, open-source (MIT) Bitcoin-only wallet from Electrum Technologies GmbH. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android and works with hardware wallets such as Trezor, Ledger, Coldcard, BitBox02 and Jade.

2 min read

Electrum is one of the longest-running Bitcoin wallets. It is light (it does not download the whole blockchain), focused only on Bitcoin, and popular with people who want a desktop wallet that can work alongside a hardware device.

What makes Electrum different

  • Bitcoin only: No altcoins, which keeps the wallet simple and focused.
  • Non-custodial: Your seed and keys stay on your computer or phone; nobody else holds them.
  • Hardware wallet support: The official documentation covers Trezor, Ledger, KeepKey, BitBox02, Coldcard and Blockstream Jade, among others.
  • Your own server: Electrum connects to Electrum servers, and you can run your own (ElectrumX or Electrs) for extra privacy.

Platforms

Windows 10 (version 1809) or later, macOS 11 or later, Linux (AppImage or Python sources) and Android 8.0 or later. There is no official iPhone version.

Download only from electrum.org

The Electrum website itself warns against downloading Electrum from any other source. The Download button goes to electrum.org; on Android use the Google Play link and check that the publisher is Electrum Technologies GmbH.

Electrum’s executables are reproducible and signed by several builders. Verify the GPG signature before installing. Antivirus programs sometimes flag Electrum on Windows; the developers recommend checking the signature rather than trusting either the warning or a random download.

Guard your seed

Your seed phrase is the wallet. Never share it, never enter it on a website, and remember that no Electrum developer or support channel will ever ask for it. For a desktop Bitcoin wallet with more coin-control views, see Sparrow Wallet.

Pros

  • Open source with reproducible, signed builds
  • Works with many hardware wallets
  • Lightweight: no full blockchain download

Cons

  • Bitcoin only
  • No iPhone version
  • Interface is technical for beginners

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my antivirus flag Electrum?

Electrum says its Windows binaries are often flagged by antivirus heuristics as false positives. Verify the GPG signature of your download; if it checks out, the file is the one the developers signed.

Does Electrum support coins other than Bitcoin?

No. Electrum is a Bitcoin-only wallet.
