Bruno is an open-source (MIT) API client for Windows, macOS and Linux. It stores collections as plain-text Bru files in a folder on your disk and works offline; optional Pro and Ultimate editions add team features.

2 min read

Bruno describes itself as a lightweight alternative to Postman and Insomnia. Its main difference is where your work lives: in your own project folder, not in an online account.

Files instead of a cloud

  • Bruno stores collections directly in a folder on your filesystem.
  • Each request is saved in Bru, a plain-text markup language, so changes are easy to review in a pull request.
  • Bruno is offline-only; its developers state there are no plans to add cloud sync.

This makes it a natural fit for developers who already keep everything in Git: the API collection sits next to the code and is versioned with it.

Installing Bruno

  1. The Download button opens the official Bruno download page, with builds for macOS, Windows and Linux.
  2. Package managers are supported too:
    • macOS: brew install bruno
    • Windows: winget install Bruno.Bruno, choco install bruno or scoop install bruno
    • Linux: snap install bruno, flatpak install com.usebruno.Bruno, or the AUR and apt repository
  3. Open Bruno and create a collection in a folder of your choice.

Open source and paid editions

The core app is open source under the MIT licence and costs nothing. The Open Source edition includes two workspaces and public Git repositories. Pro ($6 per user per month, billed annually) and Ultimate ($11 per user per month, billed annually) add unlimited workspaces, private Git providers, deeper integrations and support.

If your team already relies on cloud workspaces, compare it with Postman.

Pros

  • Collections are plain files that work with Git
  • Offline, no account needed
  • Open source under MIT

Cons

  • No cloud sync by design
  • Some team features need a paid edition
