BricsCAD is DWG-compatible CAD software now offered by Octave (formerly sold under the Bricsys name). It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with a 30-day full-featured trial covering all product levels.

2 min read

BricsCAD works natively with DWG files and uses familiar commands, so drafters coming from AutoCAD can switch with little retraining. It is also one of the few professional CAD programs with a Linux version.

Product levels

  • Lite: 2D drafting and documentation.
  • Pro: Adds 3D solid modelling and support for third-party applications.
  • BIM: Building design tools on top of Pro.
  • Mechanical: Mechanical design, assemblies and sheet metal.
  • Ultimate: Everything in one licence.

One installer covers all of these; the licence you activate decides which features are available.

Download the trial

  1. The Download button opens the official BricsCAD download page.
  2. Sign in or create an account and choose your operating system.
  3. Install BricsCAD and pick the level you want to evaluate.

The trial is full-featured for 30 days. The current release is V27. Because every level is in the same installer, you can try BIM or Mechanical tools during the trial and later license only the level you actually need, such as Lite for pure 2D drafting.

System requirements

The official requirements list Windows 10 and 11 (x86-64), macOS 12 Monterey or later, and Linux distributions with glibc 2.35 or newer. Note that Microsoft no longer supports Windows 10, so Windows 11 is the safer choice.

For a no-cost 2D tool, LibreCAD is open source. If you need the original DWG program, see AutoCAD.

Pros

  • Native DWG with familiar commands
  • Runs on Linux as well as Windows and Mac
  • One installer for all product levels

Cons

  • Paid licence after 30 days
  • Some third-party add-ons are AutoCAD-only

Frequently Asked Questions

Can BricsCAD open AutoCAD drawings?

Yes. BricsCAD uses DWG as its native file format, so it opens and saves the same drawings.

Does BricsCAD really run on Linux?

Yes. Linux builds are offered for x86-64 distributions with glibc 2.35 or newer.
