Rhino (Rhinoceros) is a 3D modelling program from Robert McNeel & Associates for Windows and macOS. Rhino 9 can be evaluated free for 90 days with all features; after that, saving and plug-ins need a licence.

2 min read

Rhino excels at smooth, precise free-form shapes, which is why it turns up in product design, jewellery, boat building and architecture. It models with NURBS curves and surfaces, so shapes stay mathematically accurate at any size.

What Rhino is used for

  • Free-form modelling: Curves, surfaces and solids for complex shapes that are hard to model in other programs.
  • Grasshopper: A built-in visual programming tool for parametric and generative design.
  • Fabrication: Export to formats used for 3D printing, CNC and laser cutting.
  • Plug-ins: A large ecosystem for rendering, analysis and industry-specific tasks.

The 90-day evaluation

  1. The Download button opens the official Rhino download page.
  2. Choose the Windows or Mac version; no credit card is required.
  3. Install Rhino and start the evaluation.

The evaluation includes all of Rhino 9 for 90 days. When it ends, saving files and loading plug-ins require a licence. If you already have a licence from work or school, you can use it instead.

Licences

Rhino is sold as a licence you buy rather than a monthly subscription; prices are on the official store. Students and teachers can buy an educational licence at a much lower price, and schools can get lab licences.

For a free open-source parametric CAD tool, look at FreeCAD. For organic modelling and rendering, Blender is free.

Pros

  • Generous 90-day full-featured evaluation
  • Buy once rather than subscribe
  • Grasshopper included

Cons

  • High upfront licence cost for commercial users
  • NURBS workflow takes time to learn

Frequently Asked Questions
