Adobe Acrobat Reader is Adobe's free PDF viewer for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. It opens, prints, fills in, signs and annotates PDFs; editing and converting PDFs requires a paid Acrobat subscription.

2 min read

Adobe created the PDF format, and Acrobat Reader remains the viewer many government forms, contracts and invoices are tested against. When a complex form refuses to work elsewhere, Reader is usually the safe choice.

What the free Reader does

  • View and print any PDF, including large technical documents.
  • Fill in forms, including interactive fields.
  • Sign documents by typing, drawing or using an image of your signature.
  • Comment and highlight, with sticky notes and drawing tools.
  • Read on the go with the mobile apps for Android and iPhone.

Downloading from Adobe

  1. The Download button opens Adobe’s official Reader download page.
  2. The page may show optional offers from partners, such as extra software, with checkboxes. Untick them if you only want Reader.
  3. Run the small installer; it downloads and installs the rest of Reader.

Free versus paid Acrobat

Reader is free. Editing the text and images in a PDF, converting PDFs to Word or Excel, combining files and creating PDFs from scratch are part of the paid Acrobat Standard and Acrobat Pro subscriptions. Reader shows these tools in its menus and offers a trial when you click them, so it is worth knowing which features you actually need.

For lighter, free alternatives, Sumatra PDF opens files almost instantly, PDF24 Creator adds free merge and compress tools, and PDFsam Basic splits and merges PDFs.

Pros

  • Reliable with complex forms
  • Free signing and commenting
  • From the creator of the PDF format

Cons

  • Heavier than lightweight PDF viewers
  • Frequently promotes paid Acrobat features
