1Password – Password Manager is the official Chrome extension from AgileBits Inc. It saves, generates and fills passwords and passkeys, and requires a 1Password membership, which can be tried for free first.

2 min read

1Password is a paid password manager made by AgileBits in Toronto. The Chrome extension is the way it works inside your browser: it fills sign-in forms, creates strong passwords and keeps passkeys and other secure information within reach.

Membership comes first

The extension requires a 1Password membership. If you do not have one, you can sign up during installation and try it for free. After the trial a paid plan is needed, so 1Password is not the right choice if you are looking for a free manager; Bitwarden and Proton Pass both have free plans.

What it does in Chrome

  • Fills logins: suggests the right account on sign-in pages.
  • Generates passwords: offers a strong password when you create an account and saves it automatically.
  • Passkeys: you can create and use passkeys from the extension and go passwordless where sites support it.
  • More than passwords: cards, addresses and secure notes can be stored and filled as well.

How to install

  1. The Download button leads to the official 1Password page on the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click Add to Chrome, then sign in to your 1Password account or start a trial.
  3. 1Password’s getting-started guide for the browser is linked from the store listing.

Privacy

1Password says the data you save is encrypted and inaccessible to the company, and that it does not use, share or sell your data. The store listing discloses that the extension handles personally identifiable information, financial and payment information and location, which relates to the account and the details you store.

Pros

  • Polished autofill for logins, cards and addresses
  • Passkey support
  • Free trial before you pay

Cons

  • Requires a paid membership after the trial
  • No permanent free plan
