Bitwarden Password Manager is the official Chrome extension of Bitwarden Inc. It autofills and saves passwords and passkeys from an end-to-end encrypted vault; the free plan covers unlimited passwords on unlimited devices.

2 min read

A password manager is most useful where you actually type passwords: in the browser. The Bitwarden extension connects Chrome to your Bitwarden vault, so it can fill logins, generate strong passwords and save new accounts as you create them.

What the extension does

  • Autofill: suggests matching logins on sign-in forms.
  • Generator: creates unique, strong passwords when you sign up for something new.
  • Passkeys: stores and uses passkeys alongside passwords.
  • Vault access: search, view and copy items from the toolbar popup.

Free plan and paid plans

Bitwarden’s free plan lets you store unlimited passwords and use them on unlimited devices, with no ads. Premium plans add advanced features, and Teams and Enterprise plans add business tools such as SSO integration, directory sync and event logs. For an overview of the desktop and mobile apps, see our Bitwarden guide.

Setup

  1. The Download button opens the official Bitwarden listing on the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click Add to Chrome, then pin the shield icon to the toolbar.
  3. Log in with your existing account or create one. Your master password unlocks the vault and cannot be recovered by Bitwarden if you forget it.
  4. Consider turning off Chrome’s own password saving so the two do not compete.

Security and data

Vault data is end-to-end encrypted, and Bitwarden says it runs regular third-party security audits. The store listing discloses that the extension handles personally identifiable and authentication information, which is expected for a password manager. Two-step login with an authenticator app or a hardware security key is supported.

Pros

  • Free plan with unlimited passwords and devices
  • Supports passkeys
  • End-to-end encrypted, regularly audited

Cons

  • Some advanced features need Premium
  • A forgotten master password cannot be recovered
