Google Dictionary (by Google) is a free Chrome extension that shows definitions in a pop-up when you double-click a word and offers a toolbar dictionary. It supports 18 dictionary languages and is published by Google on the Chrome Web Store.

2 min read

Reading an article in English and stuck on one word? Opening a new tab to look it up breaks your concentration. Google Dictionary shows the meaning right where the word is.

Three ways to use it

  1. Double-click a word on any page to see its definition in a small pop-up bubble.
  2. Use the toolbar dictionary to look up the complete definition of any word or phrase.
  3. Keep a word history (optional) to practise words you’ve looked up before.

Foreign words are translated automatically into the language you choose.

Supported dictionaries

The extension lists dictionaries for Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Czech, Dutch, English (UK and US), French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Slovak, Spanish and Turkish.

Word history

If you opt in on the options page, the extension stores your looked-up words and their definitions. You can download that history as a CSV file at any time, and you can choose to let other Chrome extensions read it; a flashcard extension, for example, could turn it into practice cards.

Installing and first use

  1. Click Download to open Google Dictionary on the Chrome Web Store and add it to Chrome.
  2. Reload your open tabs or restart Chrome. The pop-up doesn’t work in tabs that were open before installation.
  3. Test it on a normal web page. Extensions are disabled on Chrome Web Store pages, so it won’t work there.

If it stops working, open chrome://extensions, click Update and restart Chrome. Want quick notes on what you read? Google Keep Chrome Extension saves text and links in one click.

Pros

  • Definitions without leaving the page
  • Dictionaries in 18 languages
  • Exportable word history

Cons

  • Needs a reload of open tabs after installing
  • Does not work on Chrome Web Store pages

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does nothing happen when I double-click a word?

Tabs that were open before you installed the extension need to be reloaded, and extensions never run on Chrome Web Store pages. Try a fresh tab on another site.

Can I export the words I have looked up?

Yes, if you turn on word history in the options. You can then download it as a CSV file.
