Zorin OS is a Linux distribution from the Zorin Group designed for people switching from Windows or macOS. The current version is Zorin OS 18.1; Core and Education are free, Pro is a one-time paid upgrade. It needs a 64-bit dual-core CPU and 2 GB of RAM.

2 min read

Zorin OS aims to make a switch from Windows or macOS painless. Its desktop layouts imitate familiar systems, so the start menu and taskbar are where you expect them.

Editions

  • Core (free): the standard apps and four basic desktop layouts. Right for most people.
  • Education (free): adds educational software for schools and students.
  • Pro (paid): a one-time payment that adds premium desktop layouts, a creative app suite, productivity tools and installation support.

The download page also links to a help article about Zorin OS Lite for older machines.

System requirements

Zorin lists a 1 GHz dual-core Intel/AMD 64-bit processor, 2 GB of RAM, an 800×600 display and storage of 15 GB for Core, 35 GB for Education or 45 GB for Pro. Computers below these minimums may not run it.

Make the USB stick

Download the ISO for your edition, then write it to a USB stick with Rufus or copy it to a Ventoy drive. Before writing, compare the file’s SHA256 hash with the value Zorin publishes where one is available; a mismatch means the download should be repeated.

Try first, then install

Boot from the USB and use the live session to check that your Wi-Fi, touchpad and screen work. The installer can set Zorin up next to Windows, but always back up your files before changing partitions. If you want a similar beginner-friendly experience with other desktops, Linux Mint is worth comparing.

Pros

  • Layouts that resemble Windows and macOS
  • Free Core and Education editions
  • Modest hardware requirements

Cons

  • Extra layouts and apps require the paid Pro edition
  • 64-bit Intel/AMD only
