Unreal Engine is Epic Games' real-time 3D engine, used for games and for architectural visualization. It is free for individuals and companies under $1 million USD in annual revenue and for educators; larger non-game users buy seats, and games pay a 5% royalty above $1 million.
Unreal Engine is best known for games, but architects and visualization studios use it for interactive walkthroughs, VR presentations and high-end real-time renders. It offers far more control than simplified tools, at the cost of a steeper learning curve.
Licensing, in plain terms
Epic Games’ license page lists three cases:
- Free: individuals and small businesses with less than $1 million USD in annual gross revenue, plus educators and schools with no revenue limit. You get the source code and all features.
- Royalty-based (games and interactive products sold to end users): lifetime gross revenue above $1 million USD from the product is subject to a 5% royalty; Epic Games Store sales are royalty-free.
- Seat-based (other commercial use): companies over $1 million in the past 12 months that are not shipping a runtime product to end users, such as most archviz studios, need a seat license per year.
How to install
- The Download button opens the official Unreal Engine download page.
- Download and install the Epic Games launcher, then sign in with an Epic Games account.
- Open the Unreal Engine tab and click Install to download the latest version.
System requirements
Epic lists 64-bit Windows 10 with a quad-core 2.5 GHz CPU, 8 GB RAM and a DirectX 11 or 12 graphics card; the latest macOS 13 with a Metal 1.2 graphics card; or Linux (Ubuntu 18.04) with 32 GB RAM and an RTX 2080 or higher. Archviz scenes usually need much more than the minimum.
Twinmotion or Unreal?
Twinmotion, from the same company, is the simpler choice for fast design reviews. Unreal Engine suits custom interactive experiences. Models are often prepared in Blender before being brought into the engine.
Pros
- Free for small studios, educators and schools
- Full source code and all features
- Windows, macOS and Linux
Cons
- Steep learning curve for archviz newcomers
- Larger companies need seats or pay royalties
