MyPaint is a free and open-source painting and sketching program with a configurable brush engine, available for Windows, macOS and Linux and works well with graphics tablets.

2 min read

MyPaint does one job well: it gives you a canvas and good brushes. There are no photo-editing tools hiding in menus, so the interface stays out of the way while you sketch or paint from scratch.

What stands out

  • Brush engine: A large collection of brushes emulates media like charcoal, pencil and ink, and the engine is configurable enough to make your own, including “not-quite-natural” ones.
  • Tablet support: The project says it works well with Wacom and similar tablets, which is where pressure-sensitive brushes shine.
  • Fullscreen mode: Hides the interface so the canvas fills the screen.
  • Productivity tools: Layers and other helpers are included, but the focus stays on painting rather than editing photos.

Platforms and where to get it

The official site lists Linux, macOS and Windows and points to several sources: Flathub, GitHub releases, MacPorts, Chocolatey and AppVeyor builds. Its current release is in the 2.0 series, and development is community-led, so updates are less frequent than for commercial apps.

Installing

  1. Use the Download button to open the official MyPaint site.
  2. Pick the package for your system, such as the Flatpak on Linux or an installer on Windows.
  3. Connect a graphics tablet if you have one and test the pressure response in the brush settings.

Is it right for you?

MyPaint suits artists who want a quiet, distraction-free canvas. If you also need filters, selections and animation, Krita is the larger free option, and GIMP is better for photo editing.

Pros

  • Free and open source
  • Flexible brush engine
  • Distraction-free interface

Cons

  • Not a photo editor
  • Community-led development means slower updates
