MEGA is an end-to-end encrypted cloud storage service with apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. A free plan with limited storage is available, with paid plans for more space and transfer.
Most cloud drives hold the keys to your files. MEGA’s pitch is different: files are encrypted on your device with keys the company does not keep, so only people you share a key with can open them. That matters most if you store documents you would rather not leave readable on someone else’s server.
What the MEGA app does
- Folder syncing: Choose a local folder and keep it matched with your MEGA cloud drive, in one or both directions.
- Backups: Back up chosen folders to the cloud so they survive a disk failure.
- Sharing: Share a file or folder with a link, with options such as a password or expiry date for links.
- Encrypted chat and meetings: MEGA also offers encrypted messaging and video calls with the same account.
- File versioning: Older versions of a file can be restored from the cloud.
Free and paid plans
You can sign up for free and receive a limited amount of storage and transfer. Larger plans are paid and billed monthly or yearly; the current sizes and prices are shown on the MEGA site and can change. Remember that if you lose your password and have no recovery key, MEGA cannot restore access to your encrypted files.
How to download it
- The Download button opens the official MEGA desktop app page on mega.io.
- Choose the installer for Windows, macOS or Linux. Phone apps are in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
- Sign in with your MEGA account, pick a sync folder and let it upload.
If you want a mainstream alternative, compare Google Drive and Dropbox.
Pros
- End-to-end encryption by default
- Sync and backup from the desktop app
- Free plan to try
Cons
- Lost password and recovery key means lost data
- Storage and transfer limits on the free plan
Frequently Asked Questions
Can MEGA recover my files if I forget my password?
Not without your recovery key. Because files are encrypted with keys MEGA does not hold, losing both the password and recovery key means the data cannot be opened.
Does MEGA have a free plan?
Yes, with limited storage and transfer. Larger storage and transfer need a paid plan.
