WinRAR is an archive manager from RARLAB for creating and unpacking RAR and ZIP files and opening many other formats. It is shareware: it can be tried first and a license is sold on the official site.
The RAR format is still common for large downloads, game mods and multi-part backups, and WinRAR is the program made by the format’s own developer. It handles everyday ZIP work too, so one tool can cover both.
What WinRAR does
- Creates and extracts archives: Make RAR or ZIP files, and open formats such as 7z, TAR, GZ, ISO and more.
- Recovery data: Add a recovery record so a slightly damaged archive can often still be repaired.
- Split archives: Cut a big archive into volumes of a size you choose.
- Passwords and encryption: Protect an archive with a password, and optionally hide the file names inside it.
- Explorer integration: Right-click any file or folder to compress it, or double-click an archive to browse it.
Trial, license and the nag screen
WinRAR is shareware. You can download and use it for an evaluation period, after which RARLAB expects you to buy a license. In practice the program keeps working and shows a reminder window when it starts, but that does not change the licensing terms. A license is sold on the official site, and it covers the Windows version you install.
How to download it safely
- The Download button leads to the official RARLAB download page.
- Pick the 32-bit or 64-bit installer to match your Windows, or the ARM64 build if your PC uses one. Versions for other systems are listed on the same page.
- Run the installer and choose which file types WinRAR should open.
Because RAR files are often shared on sites you do not control, scan anything you extract. If you prefer a free open-source tool, 7-Zip opens RAR files too and has no trial period.
Pros
- Native RAR creation with recovery records
- Opens most common archive formats
- Split archives and password protection
Cons
- Not free for long-term use
- Shows a license reminder after the trial period
