iCloud for Windows is Apple's free app that connects an Apple Account to a Windows PC for iCloud Drive, Photos and other data. Apple provides a limited amount of free storage, with paid iCloud+ plans for more.

2 min read

If you take photos on an iPhone but work on a Windows PC, iCloud for Windows removes the manual transfer. Sign in with the same Apple Account and your files appear in File Explorer.

What syncs

  • iCloud Drive: Files from iCloud Drive show up in a folder in File Explorer, so you can open and save them like local files.
  • iCloud Photos: Pictures and videos from your iPhone or iPad download to your PC, and photos you add on the PC can upload to your library.
  • Passwords: Apple offers an iCloud Passwords extension for supported browsers so your saved logins are available on the PC.
  • Mail, contacts and calendars: These can sync with supported desktop mail programs through the app’s settings.

Cost

The app is free. Apple gives every account a limited amount of free iCloud storage, and larger amounts require a paid iCloud+ subscription. Your photos and files count against that storage, so a big photo library may need an upgrade.

How to get it

  1. Use the Download button to open the official iCloud for Windows page in the Microsoft Store.
  2. Install it, then sign in with your Apple Account and complete any two-factor verification.
  3. Choose which items to sync. Photos and iCloud Drive each have their own options.

iCloud for Windows needs a PC with a recent version of Windows and the Microsoft Store. For syncing a non-Apple phone, use Google Photos instead, and for general cloud storage on Windows you can also use Microsoft OneDrive.

Pros

  • Brings iPhone photos to a Windows PC
  • iCloud Drive in File Explorer
  • Free to install

Cons

  • Free iCloud storage is limited
  • Requires an Apple Account

Frequently Asked Questions

The app is free and includes a limited amount of free storage. You pay only if you want more iCloud storage with an iCloud+ plan.

Can I get iCloud for Windows outside the Microsoft Store?

Apple distributes it through the Microsoft Store, and its support pages point there. Use that official listing rather than third-party downloads.
