Box Drive is the desktop app from Box that shows your Box files as a drive in File Explorer or Finder. It requires a Box account, and a free individual plan exists.
Box is popular with companies that need to share documents with clients and colleagues under controlled permissions. Box Drive is the piece that brings those files onto your computer without copying the whole library to your hard drive.
How Box Drive works
- Virtual drive: Your Box content appears in File Explorer or Finder like a normal drive.
- Download on demand: Files stay in the cloud until you open them, so a big library does not fill your disk. You can mark items to keep available offline.
- Open in your usual apps: Edit a document in Word or another desktop program, and the saved changes go back to Box.
- Sharing and permissions: Use Box’s sharing options and the access rules set by your organization’s admin.
- Version history: Box keeps earlier versions of files so a mistake can be undone.
Who it is for
Box Drive is built for people who already have a Box account, often through an employer or school. Box also offers a free individual plan with limited storage, plus paid business plans with more features and admin controls. Some company policies decide whether you can install the app at all, so ask your IT team if you are unsure.
