HandBrake is a free, open-source video transcoder developed by the HandBrake Team. The current version is 1.11.2; it runs on Windows 10 or later, macOS 10.13 or later and Linux (Flatpak).
A phone video that is too big to email, an old recording that will not play on your TV, or a home movie you want to shrink before backing it up: HandBrake converts video from nearly any format into a smaller, widely supported file.
What can HandBrake do?
- Presets: One-click profiles for devices, web upload and general use, so you do not have to understand codecs.
- Modern codecs: Encode to H.264, H.265 (HEVC), AV1 and VP9 in MP4, MKV or WebM containers.
- Hardware encoding: Uses Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVENC, AMD VCE or Apple VideoToolbox when available for much faster conversion.
- Batch queue: Add many files and let them convert one after another.
- Filters and extras: Crop, resize, deinterlace and denoise video, and add or burn in subtitles.
How to download and install
- The Download button opens the official downloads page on handbrake.fr.
- On Windows, choose the x64 installer for Intel and AMD PCs, or the ARM64 build for Qualcomm-based laptops (the x64 installer is about 24 MB).
- On macOS, open the universal disk image and drag HandBrake to Applications; on Linux, install the Flatpak from Flathub.
Good to know
HandBrake cannot remove copy protection, so it will not convert most commercial DVDs or Blu-rays on its own. Only download it from handbrake.fr or the official GitHub page.
Pros
- Ready-made presets for common devices
- Supports H.265 and AV1
- Fast hardware encoding
Cons
- Cannot handle copy-protected discs
- Advanced settings take time to learn
Frequently Asked Questions
Will HandBrake reduce video quality?
Re-encoding always loses some detail, but the default presets keep it hard to notice while making the file much smaller. You can raise the quality setting if you need more detail.
Can HandBrake convert DVDs and Blu-rays?
Only discs without copy protection. HandBrake cannot remove copy protection, so most commercial DVDs and Blu-rays will not convert on their own.
