Calibre is a free, open-source e-book manager created by Kovid Goyal. The current version is 9.17.0; it runs on Windows 10 (version 1809) or later, macOS 14 Sonoma or later and Linux.
Books bought from different shops, PDFs from work and EPUB files from public-domain libraries tend to end up scattered across folders. Calibre gathers them into one searchable library and converts each book into whatever format your e-reader prefers.
What you can do with Calibre
- Manage a library: Sort and search books, and edit metadata such as title, author, tags, cover and summary.
- Convert formats: Calibre converts between dozens of e-book file types, so a book can be prepared for your particular device.
- Edit books: A built-in editor works on the inside of EPUB and Kindle files.
- Read anywhere: The Content server shares your library with phones, tablets and other computers on your network.
- Fetch news: Download articles from news sources and read them as an e-book.
Downloading the right version
- The Download button opens the official download page on calibre-ebook.com.
- Pick your operating system. The current release needs Windows 10 version 1809 or newer on Windows, or macOS 14 Sonoma or newer on a Mac.
- On older systems, the download page lists the last compatible release; for example, Windows 8 users are pointed to calibre 5.44.
- Run the installer, then follow the welcome wizard to choose a library folder and your e-reader model.
Converting from the command line
Calibre also installs a command-line converter. Its official manual gives the basic form:
ebook-convert input_file output_file [options]
The output format is taken from the file extension you give the output file.
A note on purchased books
Calibre converts files without copy protection. Books locked with DRM by a shop cannot be converted as they are.
Pros
- Library, converter, editor and reader in one
- Converts between dozens of formats
- Content server for reading on other devices
Cons
- The interface looks busy at first
- Cannot convert DRM-protected books
