Fortnite is best known for its battle royale mode, where up to 100 players drop onto an island and fight to be the last one standing as the storm closes in. Over the years it has grown into a hub of different experiences that all live inside the same app.

What can you play?

  • Battle Royale: The classic mode, with building to create cover and ramps mid-fight.
  • Zero Build: The same battle royale without building, for players who prefer pure gunplay and movement.
  • Creator islands: Thousands of community-made maps, from racing and parkour to horror and team deathmatch.
  • Other modes: LEGO Fortnite, Fortnite Festival and other experiences sit alongside battle royale in the same launcher.

Getting it on PC

  1. Fortnite is not sold through Steam; its official PC listing is on the Epic Games Store, linked from the Download button.
  2. Install the Epic Games Launcher and sign in with a free Epic Games account.
  3. Click “Get”, then “Install”; the launcher downloads the game files and keeps them updated.

System requirements

According to Epic Games’ support page, the minimum for PC is 64-bit Windows 10 version 22H2, a Core i3-3225 3.3 GHz processor, 8 GB of RAM and an Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics chip. There is no native Mac version.

What costs money?

Nothing you need to play. Every mode is free; V-Bucks, the in-game currency, buy cosmetic outfits, emotes and the Battle Pass; they do not make your character stronger.

Pros

  • Several game modes in one free app
  • Zero Build for players who do not want to build
  • Runs on modest hardware

Cons

  • Windows only on PC
  • Requires the Epic Games Launcher

Frequently Asked Questions

Do V-Bucks make you stronger in Fortnite?

No. V-Bucks buy outfits, emotes and the Battle Pass, which are cosmetic; every mode can be played without spending anything.

Can I play Fortnite on a Mac?

Not natively. On PC, Fortnite is only available for Windows through the Epic Games Launcher.
